Saturday Snippet: I’ve Been Expecting You

Welcome to Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday. Snippets of ten sentences or less are yours for the reading!

Yeah, I was getting bored with the game with the drink.  I found another scene I wanted to share. This one goes back to the inciting incident in HERO’S END. An Inner Circle Agent named Kendall is investigating  Blade’s near-fatal hovercycle accident. Aboard the medical ship, Kendall has issued orders preventing Bo (in her alias as his Joy Babe) from seeing him. An angry Bo goes looking for the high-handed agent to give him a piece of her mind and to get to the bottom of the situation. She suspects there is more to this than simple prejudice against women in the comfort trade.

He lay in wait for her outside of recovery. He bared his teeth by way of a greeting.

“I’ve been expecting you,” he said, uncoiling from his chair. “Come with me.”

Her every sense on sudden alert, Bo glanced towards Blade’s door. No help from that quarter – not this time. She followed the agent into an empty treatment room. The door hissed shut behind them. He pulled a scrambler from his pocket and pointed it at the door.

“That should take care of any interruptions,” he said.

  1. Thank goodness it was near fatal! Poor Bo. (Poor Blade!). And nothing sucks more than agents who say “I’ve been expecting you.” Nice use of the ‘scrambler.’

I was in a near fatal (non) hover-bike accident. It sucks, because now no one will let me near a motorcycle again. Double-sucks because hover-bikes rule!

  2. Love the snippet (as if there was any doubt). It’s obvious this guy knows nothing about Bo, because his attempt at trying to keep Blade away is useless. That, and when reading your pre-snippet text, I’m surprised she was only going to be giving him a piece of her mind, and not a piece of her fist…but there’s always hope. 😉

    1. She really does want to clock him, but the reality is that he’s as badass as Blade and he doesn’t care if he hurts her. She’s not inclined to go physical as her go-to response.

  3. A nice sense of trepidation coming off of this snippet. Love the tech here–the scrambler. Both cool and scary, since you might want to alert some people depending on what goes down next. Totally had my interest.

    1. She’s feeling pretty vulnerable right now. She’s emotionally wrung out worrying about Blade who’s just come out of lengthy surgery. She’s minimally armed. She’s in her Joy Babe guise. She’s on a ship in orbit and there’s not really any place to run.

      I loved writing this scene.

    1. You *are* feeling bloodthirsty today, aren’t you?

Thanks, he’s pretty slimy and typical of IC agents. Wait’ll you see him take on Blade! Perhaps Blade has met his match?

  4. Great word choices and you build the tension from the start of the scene. The scrambler at the end seals the deal that this is going somewhere beyond casual conversation. Awesome snippet.
